In this research, seismic performance of linked column system has been evaluated as a secondary lateral resisting system. Linked column is a new idea of lateral resisting system that can be used in seismic rehabilitation of existing buildings and increases the lateral load carrying capacity of buildings against the earthquake loads, so this system is used due to seismic rehabilitation with insufficient lateral load carrying capacity. For this matter special concentrically braced frame and special moment resistance frame with their models of 3, 6 and 9 story in 40, 60 and 80 percent of required strength have been designed according to a linear analysis. The considered hypothesis for models designing with 40, 60 and 80 percent of required strength are constructed and they need to be rehabilitated to provide the lack of lateral load carrying capacity of these buildings. Then linked column system as a lateral system will be superimposed to the building separated or protected to provide the lack of its resistance. Performance based design of linked column system is by both systems mutual response. After models’ designing, lateral load carrying capacity is evaluated and compared by the use of nonlinear static analysis (pushover). Therefore the capacity of structural stability and collapse mechanism of rehabilitated models according to nonlinear dynamic time history analysis has been evaluated by scaled 14 ground motion records to the design base earthquake. And the coming result is indicated based on maximum interstory drift ratio of stories. After evaluation of rehabilitated models with nonlinear analysis, this matter was revealed that linked column system has the capability of providing sufficing lateral load carrying capacity for buildings without enough lateral capacity and besides this system is suitably interacted with other researched structural systems. Linked column system has the capacity to provide the lack of buildings lateral strength in an optimum design with high energy absorption and dissipation while low occupancy is considered and also without requirement of changing or retrofitting structural members. Thus linked column system is presented as a suitable lateral load carrying system for existing buildings seismic rehabilitation.
